Hand woven by women from the Wolof ethnic background in the Theiss district in Senegal, this basket took several days to complete.
For generations, these baskets have been crafted by binding Njorax, a thick grass that grows on the edges of the wetlands with strips of palm fronds. Today the palm has been replaced by thin strips of coloured plastic, recycled from prayer mats.
The baskets with leather trimming (like this) are finished by artisans in Dakar.
