About Spinifex Collections.

Something good comes from everything! If it weren’t for the drought, Spinifex Collections would not exist. In 2002, I (Sue Smith) brought my dressmaking to town in the hope of creating some cash flow for our family’s drought stricken wool growing property west of Longreach. With four children at boarding school, (we had triplets & then another surprise 17 months later!) it wasn’t long before I realized that even 18 hour days weren’t going to cut it financially. I set off to a Trade Fair & purchased jewellery & accessories to compliment the outfits I sewed & that was the start of the creation of Spinifex Collections – what I describe as "the best little gift shop in the world"! This led to stocking gifts & homewares from around the world, but I like to specialise in those from Australia & locally made too - leather work, ceramics, glassware, jewellery, semi-precious stones, brass & bronze, silver & pewter, painting & photography.

 

Spinifex Collections is located between the butcher and the baker in the Merino Arcade, main street of Longreach - heart of the outback. Qantaslink brings people from all over the world to Longreach every day, and we bring the world to them at Spinifex Collections. Spinifex Collections was established in Longreach because I love this small country town – it’s friendly, vibrant & buzzing - with every city convenience but without the hassle of population. (Approx. 3500) I'm ‘a born & bred local’ & share Longreach as my birthplace with the world’s first flying surgeon service. I love my part of outback Australia & the way it epitomizes Dorothea McKellar’s ‘Sunburnt Country’. It was the first base for Qantas airlines & now hosts the Qantas Founders Museum & the Australian Stockman’s Hall Of Fame, both iconic tourist attractions for Longreach.

OUR TOWN

Longreach has a daily airline service from Brisbane & the famous ‘Spirit of the Outback” (train) running twice weekly, tourists from around the world enjoy the many & varied attractions Longreach has to offer. Cruises along the Thomson River with silver service dinners under the stars or a fantastic sound & light show on the banks of the river are two amazing alternatives for night time entertainment. There are several restaurants & bars – all excellent & all with a difference. You can take a sedate coach ride through the streets or gallop through the bush, tour a working property or you can take in a movie or swim in the Olympic sized pool. Longreach is home to the School of Distance Education which gives a great insight to the schooling of the children of the rural industries & their lifestyle. National parks are easily visited & the Age of Dinosaurs is well worth a visit if heading north to Winton where you can also enjoy the Waltzing Matilda Centre. The Wellshot Centre in Ilfracombe gives an interesting & historic overview of the area. Whether a fisherman or fossicker, a birdwatcher or walker, a camper or caravaner, you’ll enjoy your visit to Longreach.
